Juan Mazar Barnett Biological Station

Aves Argentinas
DESCRIPTION: The Juan Mazar Barnett Biological Station is the main work base of the Patagonia Program. It is located in the vicinity of the Lago Buenos Aires Plateau in northwestern Santa Cruz. It is 100 km from the town of Perito Moreno, entering by RN 40. At the EBJMB we have rooms equipped with beds and closets to store personal items, a library, a common space for different activities, bathrooms, a kitchen, an equipment room, and a laboratory. In addition, there is a shed where all tool maintenance and various repairs are carried out. We have solar energy for both electricity and hot water. Something of utmost importance is that there is satellite internet. To supply ourselves with fresh food, we have our own garden and chickens. We manage waste by recycling everything that is used, then taking it to different collection centers.
OBJECTIVES: This station originally emerged in 2013 in Estancia El Unco (now a section of PN Patagonia) to serve as a base for the nascent Hooded Grebe Project. With the emergence of this biological station, as a fundamental pillar, the Patagonia Program was launched, and the station quickly became a base of operations for a wide variety of Aves Argentinas’ own projects, but also for others from numerous national and international institutions. Currently, the objective of the biological station is to promote research and conservation in a logistically challenging area of Southern Patagonia, providing resources, knowledge, and personnel to guarantee work in the region.
