Conservation Methodologies Program

Context, objectives, and actions

The conservation of biodiversity in the 21st century demands new ways of observing, understanding, and acting on ecosystems. Faced with complex and dynamic threats such as climate change, invasive species, or habitat fragmentation, traditional tools must be complemented with modern and innovative methodologies that allow for the generation of more precise, rapid, and far-reaching information.

In this context, techniques such as environmental DNA (eDNA), the use of artificial intelligence (AI), automated acoustic analysis, predictive spatial models, remote sensor technology, drones, advanced statistical modeling, bioacoustics, camera traps, and many other emerging tools have become fundamental for the study and protection of species at risk and vulnerable environments. These methodologies allow access to previously inaccessible data, monitor large areas with less effort, and minimize the impact of research on fauna.

At the Hooded Grebe Foundation, we are convinced that conservation requires integrating the best of technology with ecological and territorial knowledge. For this reason, we created the Methodologies in Conservation Program, with the aim of developing, applying, and scaling innovative tools to address the environmental challenges of Patagonia.

Our strategy is based both on the design of our own projects and on active collaboration with research groups, academic institutions, and other conservation organizations. This collaborative approach allows us to enhance capabilities and accelerate the generation of knowledge in a region where the majority of endemic species are understudied and face multiple threats, such as habitat degradation, anthropic pressure, and global change.

In addition, we seek to expand the geographic scope of existing studies, incorporating new sampling areas and extending knowledge about species that have been surveyed only on a limited basis. In this way, the program contributes to the design of management and conservation strategies based on evidence, adapted to the unique conditions of Patagonian ecosystems.
